obsessing over your goals leads to narrow minded approaches
in life there are almost infinite ways to reach a destination, but i aswell as many other people think;
i want this thing
to get or obtain this thing i need to work towards it constantly and make it my primary objective
then put it into detail oriented action, every move is methodical
the next step is where people split on their thoughts about their actions
some change their approach because they feel like they aren’t doing enough, and others feel they aren’t making enough progress so they continue to work harder towards that goal with the same approach even to their detriment
in this goal obsession we build bricks one on top of the other and no matter how tall or detail oriented that tower gets, we will never feel accomplished because we didn’t build the foundation by which to measure our progress
this topic resonates with me as an artist, primarily a designer, who chisels away at their craft diligently with a nail file
i am so focused and detail oriented on doing the big and complex things
if i wanna make a pair of pants, i’m going to make the pair that i want to be on the runway. completely skipping over the fundamentals needed to make the process as seamless as possible
when your favorite designer first started making clothes, trust it wasn’t anything to run the press about
it was probably a simple block pattern with major imperfections but they kept going with the fundamentals, building their foundation, and chipping off chunks. until they became stable enough to build upwards
and this goes for all goals, professions, and artistry’s
obsessing over this thing you want without doing the boring things first will only have you carving at marble with a nail file, the fundamentals take off the big chunks
